Just So You Know How It Works

Reading time – 28 seconds  .  .  .

I was doing some cross-country driving this weekend in an area where few FM signals exist and the only strong AM stations are right wing talk radio, so I listened to Rush Limbaugh. He was talking about the possibility of a 3rd party presidential candidate, his interest in such being driven by his dislike of Hillary, Bernie and Donald. Here’s how it would work.

The Republicans would select an establishment candidate, someone who would be pleasing to, say, major campaign contributors. (Limbaugh didn’t say all of that. I added the connection to the donor class.) Such a person might have strong appeal to Republican voters, who both dislike Hillary and cannot stomach Trump as nominee, much less the possibility of him as president. This candidate would likely win some states and, with the war of attrition already underway between Hillary and Donald, each trying to get voters to see the other candidate as loathsome, it’s possible nobody would garner the necessary 270 electoral college votes to become president. In such a scenario, the Constitution calls for a vote in the House to determine who the next president will be.

And the House is led and dominated by Republicans, who would elect their hand-selected candidate. Their rich benefactors will be pleased.

Just so you know how it works.

Ed. note: There is much in America that needs fixing and we are on a path to continually fail to make things better. It is my goal to make a difference – perhaps to be a catalyst for things to get better. That is the reason for these posts. To accomplish the goal requires reaching many thousands of people and a robust dialogue.

    Good column!
The fact that Mitt Romney is trying to get anyone but him to run says it all. He is the only one with any name recognition to mount the campaign and he won’t do it because he doesn’t want the damage that will come to the one who runs. Whoever the third party candidate is will have no future in politics. Hey, I guess that’s Mitt Romney! What a jerk!

If that happens, it’s time to move to Canada, eh?

Which may be what Paul Ryan has been thinking all along?
