POST 1110

From a rally for Tammy Baldwin

Jax Pix

Here are some of my pics.

President

Kamala Harris (queue the forehead slaps), because we want our President to be a person who has neither dementia nor a mania to be der fuhrer. We want her to be focused on We The People.

Senate

Arizona – Reuben Gallego – Good, solid, proven congressman. Plus, he isn’t election denier, pants-on-fire Kari Lake.

California – Adam Schiff – Super smart January 6 Committee member and impeachment prosecutor. His Republican opponent, Steve Garvey, was a terrific baseball player. He should have stuck to that, because if elected he would be another Trump mini-me suck up, MAGA extremist. Plus, he sounded like a doofus in their debate.

Florida – Debbie Mucarsel-Powell – She’s good and she has going for her that she isn’t spineless, elitist, arrogant, dangerous Rick Scott, co-sponsor of a national abortion ban bill and too chicken to face Mucarsel-Powell in a debate.

Maryland – Angela Alsobrooks – Her opponent, Larry Hogan, isn’t awful like most Republicans. But he’s unacceptable because he’s a Republican, which means he would be an obstruction to anything Harris will want to do for We The People.

Michigan – Elissa Slotkin – She’s a seriously smart, solid woman, proven in Congress. She’s a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst (think: Jack Ryan) and Department of Defense official. Unlike Trump, she has a security clearance.

Missouri – Lucas Kunze – Vote for Kunze because he isn’t Josh Hawley. That alone should be enough to vote for him. He isn’t reprehensible –  Hawley is – and he never fist pumped insurrectionists.

Montana – Jon Tester – One of the best. Super solid and sensible guy. We need him and many others to be voices for We The People and to restore sanity in Congress.

Ohio – Sherrod Brown – Super guy. Hard working, sensible and loyal as the sunrise.

Nevada – Jacky Rosen – She’s been tested and has the cred to attract bipartisan support for important legislation. Plus, her opponent, carpetbagger Sam Brown from Texas, is just another MAGA doomer and blamer without a single constructive idea or the spine to stand up to the extremists.

Pennsylvania – Bob Casey – Sensible, non-histrionic patriot. Calm voice of reason. You remember reason, right?

Texas – Colin Allred – First, you should vote even for a potted plant over Ted Cruz, who is the worst, most hated senator not named Josh Hawley. Second, Allred is first rate – smart and loyal. Plus he’ll have the brightest smile and the best teeth in the Senate.

Wisconsin – Tammy Baldwin – She’s really smart, capable and tested. She won’t be stopped when it’s hard to do what needs to be done. Wisconsinites deserve her.

West Virginia – Glenn Elliott – Because the Republican candidate will sell out those poor people – yet again.

Issues Resources

Check with March For Our Lives for recommendations of candidates who will promote gun safety.

Check with any women’s rights organization for who to vote for if you care about girls, women, your sister, your mom, your daughter, the people on your street or the people on any street, and the rights of all of us.

Check for party affiliation, because Republicans will suck up to Trump and the insane radicals, keeping your children at mortal risk just for just going to school. They will curtail the rights of everyone. Vote for Democrats. Not because only Democrats have good ideas, but because they are a legitimate party with actual, thoughtful policies and a clear view to making the lives of We The People (that’s you and me) better. They’re beholden only to us and to the Constitution, not to a cult subservient to a demonic dictator wannabe. Plus, they believe in democracy and the rule of law, unlike the Republicans who want to “terminate the Constitution.”

We’ll deal with House races and some state races in another post.

Same Old Mendacity

You already know that if Trump’s mouth is moving that he’s either eating a Big Mac or lying. No news there. And you already know that idiot boy genius Elon Musk is just as lie-ful. But did you know that in his country of origin, South Africa, that his name in Afrikaans means “idiot boy genius”?

To be clear, I am not Musk’s interpreter so I cannot make sense for you of any of the idiot things he says. I don’t know if he actually believes the idiocy that Democrats are recruiting undocumented people to vote or if he believes that Democrats can control the weather. Okay, that was loony MTG who said that. See my post this coming Wednesday.

Musk promotes the Trumpy lie that we have a massive voter fraud problem. How might he have adopted that idiot notion?

In the 2016 election there were only 30 cases of claimed voter fraud nationally that were referred for prosecution, or just 0.00001 percent of all votes cast. They didn’t all result in guilty verdicts, so the actual incidence of voter fraud was actually lower. O’ those pesky facts. They point menacingly at Republican lies about elections.

Musk is prone to saying lots of idiotic things. I really don’t care about that. I do care that he has a huge platform to spread them and that he “re-posted [a deepfake of Vice President Kamala Harris] that racked up a staggering 1.2 billion views.”

So, he isn’t just an idiot boy genius. He is a very dangerous idiot boy genius whom I would be ignoring were he not in a position to influence so many uninformed or low propensity voters with his lies.

Respect yourself: Don’t buy a Tesla.

From The “Ya Gotta Read This” Department

My pal Ed Gurowitz offers his insights periodically and you must read this post. He reports on attending a Tim Walz rally in Reno NV and manages to deliver both the content and the feel of what he experienced. His description vividly captures the stark differences in the versions of our future that we’re being offered by the two very different presidential candidates.

This is a Don’t Miss piece. Indeed, it’s something valuable to pass along to those you know who are otherwise likely to skip this election. And tell them to read the t-shirt to the right.

Vote to keep this delusional out of the Oval Office.

A Bucketful of Weird

POST 1109

Heart Wrenching Quote of the Week

Misty is a teacher in Charlotte, NC. She was interviewed on CNN. She spoke of teachers going to the houses of students to make sure they were okay, as they were living in rubble. One of the teachers is missing and they are surrounded by the disaster and the suffering that is everywhere, trying to help the kids have something that feels normal. Misty said that’s critical for the kids, because,

“Normal just washed away  .  .  . “

Their ordinary lives just washed away. Food and drinkable water washed away. Their homes washed away. Their hopes, dreams, security and perhaps friends and family washed away. The death toll stands at 232. No one knows how many are missing and there is no way to calculate the devastation.

The people wading through the muck and rubble are our family, neighbors and community even if at a distance. When disaster hits, we roll up our shirtsleeves and lend a hand. We come together for one another.

And our help, already critically needed, is going to become far more desperately needed, as Hurricane Milton slams across Florida.

CNN put together this list of organizations providing relief. Just click the link and pick one to help our people, because we step up for our community. It’s just what we do, so it would be weird not to.

Weird Black Nazi Wish List

North Carolina Republican candidate for governor and self-labeled Black Nazi, Mark Robinson, has said many offensive things. Among them,

Slavery is not bad. Some people need to be slaves. I wish they would bring it back. I would certainly buy a few.”

Maybe I’ll buy some slaves, too. Robinson will be my first purchase. The first thing I’ll do as his master is to end all of his freedom and work him to exhaustion every day. Just wondering if he would still think “slavery is not bad.”

Weird.

The Weird Candidate

From an article in The Atlantic Daily on October 2 entitled “Beyond Handshakes,” focused on the Vice Presidential debate:

.  .  .  Vance slyly executed a strategy to make himself, and Trumpism, appear “normal.” He eschewed talk of “childless cat ladies” and ran from his own lies about Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. That such a sentence needs to be written tells you all you need to know about the ugly tenor of this race.

Actually, it tells you all you need to know about the ugly dishonesty and cruelty of Republican politicians.

Weird.

Springfield Geese

Turns out that Trump and Vance are sort of right – someone did kill geese in Springfield, OH. But it wasn’t one of the legally resident Haitians.

Springfield idiot and non-Haitian, Brian Comer, was having fine sport killing golf course pond geese on September 10. Got busted for it. There are no reports of him killing neighbors’ dogs or cats and eating them or whether he’s a Trump supporter – you do the guessing on that. Regardless, he’s seriously weird.

FEMA Funds Never Fed Our Undocumented

Following Hurricane Helene, Donald Trump blasted out damning crapnews that FEMA is running out of money for relief because they’re funneling millions to undocumented immigrants. Trump SS officer Steven Miller and idiot genius Elon Musk are helping to spread that lie. The details of this Trump-stupid FEMA accusation are too long to include here, so read Heather Cox Richardson’s explainer.

Worse, at a time when tens of thousands of Americans are desperate and counting on the heroic rescue teams working hard to save them, feed them, to bring them to safety and to give them hope, Trump is crushing their hopes and their belief in their country. Trump is weird and he’s cruel beyond words. But, you knew that.

BTW – When he was president he did exactly what he’s falsely accusing Biden of doing. He diverted FEMA money from relief for victims of Hurricane Maria to use it to punish “others.” While those devastated by the hurricane were Americans, he didn’t care because, hey, they’re just Puerto Ricans. To refresh your memory, this is the paper towel tossing incident. See this capture of his reprehensible and weird nature.

“That Was a Damning Non-Answer”

Walz: Did [Trump] lose the 2020 election?

Vance: Tim, I’m focused on the future. Did Kamala Harris censor Americans in the wake of the 2020 Covid situation? (As though that fantasy was in the future – and the answer is no.)

Walz: That was a damning non-answer.

Vance’s slimy-squirmy avoidance of Walz’s question lit up the debate and Walz nailed him on it. Good for all of us.

Actually, Walz let pass nearly all of Vance’s non-answers (about 22 of them) and his lies (uncountable), much to the frustration of fact-based viewers. No clue why Walz did that.

Trump’s nearly successful efforts to thwart the will of the people of the United States in 2021 and Vance’s support for that felony is ugly. But We The People believe our eyes and ears and we know what happened. The Vance-Dance wasn’t just damning. It was criminally damning.

And weird.

Reality Roundup

You already know that some of us have a flimsy relationship with truth, facts, science and other parts of reality. Lies, misdirection, fantasies, fatuous rumors and conspiracies have achieved great popularity with many of our less sharp-eyed fellow citizens. Their opinions, based on nothing more than personal bias and cartoon-ish flights of insanity, have supplanted facts in their minds. That’s an impressive achievement and actually quite a problem.

A fine essay was offered in the New York Times a couple of weeks ago – Facts Matter, and They Don’t Care How You Feel, by Francis S. Collins, former director of the National Institutes of Health. His piece is a clearheaded approach to telling us that reality is what it is and that our confirmation bias, bad attitudes and our need to find a boogeyman behind every tree don’t change reality.

So no, the Earth is not flat. The 1969 moon landing did happen. So did the Holocaust. There were no sex trafficked young girls in the basement of that pizza shop in DC (actually, there is no basement in that building). There are no Jewish space lasers and vaccines don’t kill, neuter or blind people. They saved hundreds of thousands of lives just in America, despite Trump’s efforts to get Americans to instead inject bleach, Lysol and little ultraviolet lights and to take a drug approved solely to treat malaria. We know all this because there is massive evidence that declares the realities, even as conspiracy wingnuts and wacko political candidates display their very serious mental limitations by rejecting reality and imperiling all of us.

Weird.

Just get this:

Shifting back to reality will take powerful, consistently muscular, banner-waving, truth telling, lie smashing, propaganda pummeling communication and a personal touch. Anything less than that will cause us to descend into a freedom killing wasteland. There are only 26 days left and this will take all of us. It’s time to step up. Now.
.

Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring when tomorrow comes!

Odd Critters

POST 1107

Odd Humans

See note #5 below

Upon seeing him on Bill Maher’s program on September 27, I remembered that Yuval Noah Harari is a favorite author of Barack Obama. I just ordered Harari’s book Sapiens and hope to find a little understanding about humans from those pages.

My non-scientific, anecdotal observation is that for most of we humans, upon learning of the suffering of others, we first translate that into how we would feel were we suffering in that way. That probably isn’t true of a mother responding to a crying baby, but it likely is true when we hear about the Gazans today. We see the suffering people and do an automatic, “What if that were me or someone I love?” We bypass simple empathy for those actually suffering in the moment and make it about ourselves, a “me thing.”

Feel free to push back on this and perhaps we’ll all learn something valuable. But if there is any validity to my observation, then, for example, that lack of simple empathy may well be part of why our political insanity makes it impossible to create what are called “common sense gun safety laws.” The cruel irony, of course, is the absence of any common sense.

I just don’t see any common sense in our allowing our citizens to own AR-15s or bump stocks or large capacity magazines. It makes no sense for an 18-year-old, years from having a mature brain that can fully anticipate consequences and for whom risk is just an exercise in excitement to have the right to purchase weapons of war. But we let this insanity – this total lack of common sense – go on, as our legislators suck up to the firearms industry in order to get campaign contributions. And then we reelect them! That’s insane.

When the awful shooting occurred – any shooting – did you feel affected? If you lived in Nerwtown, CT (Sandy Hook Elementary School) you did. Same for Highland Park, IL on the 4th of July two years ago and all the others when it’s close to home. We automatically identify when the threat feels near.

I’m feeling that way now because two of my grandchildren are in college, in different schools, and each had a shooting nearby them, one on and the other just off campus. That’s really close to the heart for me. But it’s likely you didn’t even hear about those shootings because we have two mass shootings every three days and lots more single shootings in this shooting gallery of a country. Most of the attention to them fades away quickly, covered only by local news and even then only for a day or two. Then the journalists are off to cover the next “If it bleeds, it leads” event.

My grandchildren are okay, thanks for asking, but I am not. My fire is stoked once again to a roaring inferno over our insane refusal to protect our own people until the blood is flowing close to home. And even then we do nothing to prevent the next massacre, just like the days following the Sandy Hook slaughter of first graders, when we did nothing but offer impotent, cowardly and offensive “thoughts and prayers.”

If you need to feel that fire in order to understand and to take action, just imagine that those were your children or grandchildren being just a short distance from that campus gunfire. Imagine if they had to “shelter in place,” hiding in their dorm rooms as the murderer was hunted down. Imagine them at last able to leave their dorms, walk outside and realize how terribly exposed and at risk they are all the time. Do you feel that fire now?

No matter where it happens and whether we feel it or not, it’s always close to home for someone or it will be soon. Do we only care after the fact, or are we willing to go on the hunt to recapture some common sense? Our election in 29 days seems like a good time to gather our wits about us and elect people who we believe have common sense. Check March For Our Lives first, then Everytown For Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action. Get involved – before you’re ordered to shelter in place.

About that about “me thing” – it likely doesn’t even register that there is an ongoing civil war in Sudan and many thousands of people are starving because we Americans pretty much don’t identify with the Sudanese. So, like I said, if it isn’t us and it isn’t close to home, it doesn’t register.

We really are odd critters.

Biggest Idiot of the Month

Speaking of odd critters, as the winds and rain of hurricane Helene were rapidly ramping up, the governors of most of our southeastern states mobilized their emergency teams and national guard units. They put all citizens on alert and called DC asking for a declaration of emergency to get help from FEMA as fast as possible.  All of them did that – except one.

Republican Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee took a different approach to dealing with that monster hurricane. He refused to reach out to our federal agencies for the help the people in his state would soon desperately need. He made no request for a declaration of emergency for Tennessee. Instead, Gov. Lee called for a “voluntary day of prayer and fasting.”

That’s right: book banners are idiots, too. Click me

Yes, really!

He didn’t ask for FEMA help until flash floods were drowning entire towns and cities in his state. Of course, President Biden approved the request immediately.

If they could talk, I bet the people in Tennessee who died in that monster storm would have something to say to Gov. Lee about his official state response of prayer and fasting, when food, water and boots on the flooded ground would be so terribly and obviously needed. He’s weird in a “beating drums in the jungle” kind of way and as a result has lost the support of his dead Bible thumping constituents – perhaps some live ones, too.

Congratulations go to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee for being the Biggest Idiot in September.

Freedom Of Speech

POST 1105

From the First Amendment:

“Congress shall make no law  .  .  .  abridging freedom of speech  .  .  .”

To be clear, that has nothing to do with whether the owners of social media sites or newspapers can keep us from speaking on their platforms. They can. That has everything to do with whether the government can muzzle us, keeping us from speaking truth to power. It can’t.

So, Trump can bray his idiocies and judgements, like claiming that Biden is the worst president in history. The government can do nothing to stop that. But he is still subject to the laws regarding defamation, a concept that even his massively expensive losses to E. Jean Carroll don’t seem to have gotten through to him. Just think about all the people he’s defamed and who could file actions against him, like his lies about Haitians eating dogs, cats and geese and his various claims about sexual improprieties, like those aimed at Kamala Harris and other successful women. Those are abhorrent, but it would be far worse if he or any of us were prohibited from speaking truth to power.

From Professor Timothy Snyder’s post of September 19, following his meeting with Volodymyr Zelens’kyi:

The notion of “free speech” has become very inflated, used all too often just to mean the right to offend someone or cause disruption by knowingly telling lies, often from a place of power and wealth. The reason why we care about freedom of speech, though, is that we want to protect the dignity of the individual and protect the individual from the powers that be.  Freedom of speech is protected so that we can speak our truths to power, not so that power can force its lies on us.  It must be a right, in other words, because truth is risky.

  • – Prof. Timothy Snyder
  • Satire of the Week

Trump Says He Will Be Too Senile to Debate in Late October

Melania

In 2018 First Lady Melania Trump visited a detention center for children who had been ripped from their parents’ arms by Melania’s husband. She wore a trench coat on which had been written in bold white paint, “I Really Don’t Care. Do U?”

She was about to see infants and children crying in cages and she wore that coat with that message. Most of us were stunned seeing that, but now Melania claims the message was aimed at Ivanka. Right. Sure. Truth be told, I really don’t care about her claim. Do U?

This is the same Melania who, unlike most first ladies for a long time, championed nothing for we common folk. When we did see her it was clear that the only thing that was important to her was to be seen as glamorous.

She is the same Melania who couldn’t be bothered to attend the ceremonies on 9/11. Instead her husband was accompanied at Ground Zero by his new hate monger, 9/11 denier and current bimbo, Laura Loomer. I use that term “bimbo” because it’s his word for Stephanie Ruhle and so many other women. Melania was nowhere to be seen at the ceremonies. I guess she’s right: she really doesn’t care.

So, tell me why we should care about her new book, other than wondering if parts were plagiarized from Michelle Obama, like she did in her speech at the 2016 Republican National Convention. She’s promoting the book now and has the same right of free speech as the rest of us. I won’t be buying a copy, though, because, hey, I don’t care about Melania. Do U?

Quote of the Week

From Jimmy Kimmel:

“Sorry to break your cold little heart, Donald, but I endorsed Kamala Harris for president.”

I like Jimmy Kimmel and heartily approve his endorsement, but he got one thing wrong. Trump doesn’t have a heart.

Okay, that’s just a little fun, but there is a serious issue embedded in all of this. It’s about how we will exercise our freedom of speech, how we will make our voices heard. We must make them heard because, as Professor Snyder cautions us, “truth is risky” and we have to take that risk if we are to keep our freedom of speech.

One of the risks is that if we were to fail to exercise our freedom of speech by telling the truth, we could lose our right of freedom of speech entirely. Some strongman would come along and snuff it out, like a candle going dark – or a democracy going dark.

Look at the countdown timer below and you’ll see that we don’t have much time left to do what we can do, what must be done.

You can write letters to the editor, if you still have a newspaper.

You can post your comments – your speech – to these Disambiguations.

You can connect with a voter call operation – find one at www.JoinTheUnion.us

You can meet some nice people while canvasing for Democratic candidates in swing states.

You can write postcards to voters in swing states.

You can post a yard sign in front of your house.

You can attend rallies and cheer for what you know is right.

You can talk to your neighbor Bubba and ask why he plans to vote for Trump, when Trump would rather see his daughter die than get the help she needs for her rape-caused pregnancy. Okay, maybe that’s too in-his-face.

You can kick in a few bucks to help a Democrat win election in a swing state.

You can vote – and bring some neighbors with you to the polls – see below in RED.

All of these are exercising your freedom of speech, specifically to protect and defend our democracy so that your children and grandchildren will have that same sweet wine. And U care deeply about that.

While you’re deciding which actions you’ll take, watch this post from Steve Schmidt.

Voting and getting out the vote reduce the risk of unwanted presidencies!

Eventually, Trump Will Go Away – But

POST 1102

Congratulations To The Crazies

Donald Trump said at the presidential debate,

“In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in [Haitian immigrants], they’re eating the cats, they’re eating, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there.”

Rolling Stone reported on Thursday,

“’City of Springfield received a bomb threat that has prompted an immediate response from local and regional law enforcement,’ the city wrote on its Facebook page. “

Authorities found no bomb. What they did find was a verbal trigger from Trump and Vance, both jolting a shot from Trump’s extremist supporters.

Consider this bomb threat following Trump’s vile statement, in the context of what follows.

There Is Far Worse Than Trump To Fear

Trump will go away, either by death at the polls, imprisonment or death from Big Macs and fries. But what will not go away are the millions who follow him, some of whom worship him, many of whom respond as reliably as Pavlov’s dog, only violently.

Trump has little power that is his own. His power comes from the consent of his MAGA hordes and he wields it with stunning cruelty, capriciousness, selfishness, ignorance and a lot of other words you yourself can append to this sentence.

Traditional legislators who caved to Trump didn’t do it because of his power. They caved because of the power of the voters, who gave Trump their consent and he primaried those who wouldn’t bow down to him. The power lies with the 30 million who follow Trump.

Trump will go away. He will find a new calling as a full time criminal defendant and then change professions and relocate from Mar-a-Lago to a prison cell. But those angry, aggrieved, temper tantrum MAGAs will not go away. Someone will take Trump’s place to prey upon their willingness to be manipulated.

So, the question is not how to get past Trump. We’ll do that on November 5. It’s how to deal with 25% of the 30 million angry MAGAs who think their threats of assault and their violence are good and appropriate acts of patriotism. They are people who want to tear it all down, like a kid who lost a game of Monopoly and is throwing tokens, money, Chance cards and the game board.

For nine years the focus has been on keeping power from Trump. Books have been written, podcasts have been podded, political blabbers have blabbed, but I have not heard much about how to deal with the angry people who still will be here after Trump is gone.

They get cattle prodded regularly by right wing hate mongers, know nothings and liars, so the fire of their anger gets replenished constantly. They wave the flag and believe that they are true patriots – maybe the true patriots, which means that they believe that you aren’t. They will not go gently into a Trump-less night.

The radicals’ obsession with controlling women’s bodies, their plan to impose a 13th century patriarchal tyranny upon us and the sometimes entertaining but most often infuriating weirdness of Trump and Vance are huge turnoffs for millions of non-extremist righty Americans. Perhaps good sense is slowly bleeding into our political reality.

Keep in mind that Project 2025 extreme tyranny isn’t repulsive to the MAGA far right. With or without the White House or Congress, they will still want to impose that domination on all of us. Even after Trump is just a horrid chapter in the history books we will be left with that long term challenge. It is a citizen-made fire stoked by long held resentments over both real and imagined wrongs and insults, disrespect and broken promises. That has to be dealt with in an effective manner or the consequences may be terrible.

Meanwhile, the first step is to do what is necessary on November 5, because

Trump Must Never Get His Hands On Any Power Greater Than The Flush Handle Of A Prison Toilet.
.

Eventually, Trump will go away, either by death at the polls, imprisonment or death from Big Macs and fries – but.

We’ll still have big work to do, because while the dogs and cats in Springfield, OH are safe, we are not.

Think: Anti-women, crazed politicians. Votes to criminalize doctors, nurses, hospital executives and drive them away, leaving vast maternity care deserts.

They claim to be pro-life, but that’s a lie. They’re for capital punishment and weapons of war in the hands of anyone. They’re against programs to benefit our vets and IVF, against programs to help poor children and pregnant women at risk of disease and death, and they’re for programs that limit and warp children’s education.

Sane-Washing

It’s what our print and electronic media do when they treat Trump’s bumbling rambles and nonsensical idiocies seriously or when they attempt to translate the babble.

Read David Corn’s explainer. Sane-washing is a journalistic lunacy, like whataboutism and both-sidesism. It is a voluntary surrender to insanity, an effort to translate gibberish into something meaningful. It’s like man-splaining misogyny or explaining racism by contorting the words of Jesus.

Mental Health Wake Up

POST 1099

CAUTION! THIS IS NOT SNARK

.
Ugly Truth

We all know it’s a mental health thing, right? I mean, who but a mentally sick person would kill two kids and two teachers and wound 9 others? Who but a wacko dad would give an assault rifle to his mentally messed up 14-year-old kid?

“You don’t have to have been physically injured in this to be a victim,” District Attorney Brad Smith said outside the Barrow County [Georgia] courthouse. “Everyone in this community is a victim. Every child in that school was a victim.”

Who but someone deranged would blast away 20 first graders at Sandy Hook Elementary School? Or get bump stocks for his combat weapons, so he could fire over 1,000 bullets into concert attendees in just 10 minutes? He murdered 59 people and wounded at least 700 more at the Music Festival in Las Vegas.

They would be incoming freshmen right now. Thanks go to JN for this banner.

How crazy would someone have to be to massacre 17 kids at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland), or murder sabbath service attendees at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh or kill grannies shopping at Topps Supermarket in Buffalo or murder the bible study people at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston or the County Environmental Health and Public Health employees in San Bernardino? Something must be mentally wrong with a person who would do such things.

And there’s plenty more insanity.

The political slaves to campaign contributions from the big bucks firearms industry will only admit that our daily slaughters can be blamed on mental health. Surely, they say, there’s no connection to our insane interpretation of the Second Amendment that allows combat weapons to be in the hands of anyone with the strength to lift one. But that excuse is insane. It’s a lie and they know it. We know it.

We are by far the world’s leader in firearms homicides and it isn’t because our kids watch more violent video games or because we are more mentally deranged than people in other countries or because we make and watch more violent movies. There’s just one reason:

We have more firearms per capita than any other nation on Earth – 120 of them per 100 Americans, including babies. That’s double the rate of the next most gun crazy country.
.

It’s murderously easy to get a gun and ammunition. And that’s why we’re Number 1 in murders.

Are we massively mentally deranged, suffering from various violent behavioral anomalies, disorders, psychoses and apathy, too? Of course we are.

We’d have to be mentally ill to continue to elect people who will not do what 80% of us send them to office to do, like pass tough, common sense gun safety legislation. But we keep sending murder weapon enablers to Congress. It’s the very definition of insanity.

Of course we’re crazy, as we gasp at the atrocities and see the faces of the shell shocked survivors who will forever suffer from their trauma. But then we do nothing to stop the next shooting. That’s insane.

We ignore the paralyzing, knee collapsing shock that assaults our first responders who are first to the bloody crime scenes and have to face the horrid truth of the massacres and pick up what is left of those slaughtered. Then we move on and let those heroes fend for themselves. That’s insane.

And we ignore that our flag waving politicians have voted to further de-fund our mental health facilities. That’s insane.

Yeah, we have a mental health problem. It’s us.

Solutions

The Second Amendment is:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

The reason for the amendment is spelled out in the first 13 words. It was included in the Constitution to placate southern enslavers who feared a slave uprising. That got Southern states to vote to adopt the Constitution. But the need for protection against a slave uprising no longer exists and it hasn’t since the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865.

Those 13 words call for not just any militia, but a well regulated militia. That means a force of trained troops under the command of a regulating authority. We have that. It’s our National Guard and every state has one. We have no need for vigilante militias or vengeance seeking wackos. So, second Amendment enthusiasts and the gun industry conveniently ignore all 13 words, focusing only on the last 14.

Those 14 words tell us that We The People may keep and bear arms, meaning firearms. In the Founders’ time there were only flintlock pistols and muskets. They didn’t have semi-automatic pistols or AR-15s or bump stocks or large capacity magazines. The right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment applied to muskets.

So, let’s be strict originalists, just as our extremist right wing Supreme Court justices think of themselves. Let’s change our understanding of the Second Amendment to mean exactly what the Founders meant.

American citizens may keep and bear all the musket ball firing flintlock pistols and long guns they want. And those are the only firearms that we originalists should allow.

Muskets have a repeat firing rate of possibly one ball fired every 30 seconds. If the Las Vegas shooter had used a musket instead of his bump stock-modified AR-15 he could have harmed only about 20 people in his 10 minutes of carnage, instead of over 750.

For our gun myopians:

  1. The Second Amendment wasn’t about showing what a tough guy you are, taking your AR-15 to Starbucks or to a bar or to polling places to intimidate voters, so don’t do that insane thing.
  2. Put trigger locks on your firearms and lock them up unloaded so that your aggrieved kid can’t grab them and kill other kids at his school, like that deranged 14-year-old kid at Apalachee High School in Georgia did last week. Same for the shooters at Sandy Hook, Parkland and Uvalde.
  3. Try being a good dad instead of a pretend soldier with a warped notion of patriotism. And get into therapy that focuses on anger management.
Wake Up

This is a wake up call to all of us to elect representatives who will do what We The People want them to do. Doing anything less is insane.

Wake up.

“Mind Your Own Damn Business”

POST 1092

The Democratic VP Rollout

The best secret pick in politics kept the focus off Trump and Vance for a week or two and kept us energized and filled with hope. Then we found out Harris’ VP pick was Tim Walz and much of the country sang out a heartfelt chorus of, “Who?”

If you watched the rollout of this campaign duo, introduced by Gov. Josh Shapiro, you now know who. After VP Harris took to the podium to introduce him, Walz gave the fiery speech of an impassioned Midwesterner, a former teacher, high school football coach, Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard, congressman and governor. If you watched, you felt the heat, you saw the light and you became fired up with hope. That is what has been sorely lacking. Having hope once again feels so good.

Gov. Tim Walz told us the Golden Rule in small towns like where he was raised. It’s “Mind your own damn business.” The crowd cheered him as he connected that to:

Republicans sticking their noses into your doctor’s office as you are in a hospital gown being examined.

Republicans, mind your own damn business.

When extremist parents and extremist elected officials tell you what books your children may not read.

Republicans, mind your own damn business.

BTW: Here’s the newest – a statewide book ban in Utah. I guess the geniuses in Salt Lake City think they know better than all the moms and dads in the state. I think they should mind their own damn business.

When extremist politicians tell you that you may not bring water to people keeping the faith on a hot day, standing in long lines so they can vote

Republicans, mind your own damn business.

Republicans came up with the term “nanny state” years ago and have long used it to rail with phony indignation and self-certain puffery over programs designed to help people. They thought we should take responsibility for ourselves and that the government should butt out of our lives. Instead, now they intrude into our lives with the idiocies listed above and more. It’s crazy, I know, weird, even, but it’s possible that they might be hypocritical. I think they should

Mind their own damn business and get the hell out of ours!

You do, too.

Quotes From The Night Of The VP Rollout

From David Hogg, survivor of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland, FL) mass shooting and co-founder of Never Again and Leaders We Deserve:

Young people are fired up like I’ve never seen to vote in this election, and Governor Walz is turbocharging that.

More from Hogg .  .  .

It’s such a breath of fresh air to feel hope.

Yes, he feels it and millions more of us do, too, including our X-ers, Ys, Millennials and Gen-Zs. That’s very good, because we look to them for the courage to see and make the repairs this nation needs. The starting point is to banish the fascists.

Hey, “Banish the Fascists” – pretty good election slogan. Not as good as “Mind your own damn business,” but still pretty good.

Fighting Back Against the Fascists

Kirk Bangstad is an activist and the owner of Minoqua Brewing Company in Northern Wisconsin. He is fighting an ongoing battle against far right wingnuts who are trying to put him out of business, this solely because of his activism. Like Trump and MAGAs everywhere, they are using our system of democracy to destroy freedom and democracy itself.

Bangstad is a prolific chronicler of it all and recently offered an interesting perspective. Here it is, slightly edited for brevity.

I’ve tried a couple of Kirk’s brews and they’re terrific. A portion of the proceeds of beer sales goes to fighting those who would destroy our democracy. You know: the fascists. So, if you’d like to help Kirk fight the good fight, then get into some good trouble, as John Lewis advised. You can raise your fist against fascism and raise your beer stein in a fine toast at the same time. Click here.

To the right is one of Kirk’s activist efforts, this one in Milwaukee. He spends the money from beer sales wisely.

Document of the Week

You know about Project 2025, Trump’s users guide to demolish democracy and institute fascism in America with him as dictator. Because it’s 922 pages are too long there have been quite a few offerings to simplify its horrors – here’s one.

Now we have this document. The affected population counts and a few other things in it are particular to Florida, but if you are in one of those states controlled by MAGA psychopathic legislators, the principles apply to you, too.

Florida is a special case of citizen abuse by authoritarian wannabees. Indeed, clarity about this was ignited by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ extremist mania, including some of the “Mind your own damn business” abuses listed above. That prompted me last year to declare that Florida is the canary in the democracy mine. It’s only a half step ahead of our entire nation if the fascists get their hands on the controls.

Read the 2-page document. You won’t like what it says. Then ponder what to do about it.

If you’re in Florida, contact Floridians For Democracy and you’ll find a bunch of clear-headed folks like you. They know what to do about what those dreadful documents threaten. FFD is a fine place to get into good trouble.

Smack Down

For an explanation of Tim Walz’ military retirement and a smack down of JD Vance and his reprehensible attack on Walz’ service, take a listen to what Lt. Col. (Ret.) Adam Kinzinger has to say. Vance’s dishonor makes the possibility of his having influence on policy or exercising national power absolutely unthinkable.

I like “YES WE KAM” better.

From Trump’s speech at a rally in Philadelphia, June 22, 2024, confirmed by Snopes:

No water in your faucets. You ever tried buying a new home and you turn it on? They have restrictors in there. You want to wash your hair. You want to wash your hands. You turn on the water and it goes drip, drip. The soap, you can’t get it off your hand. So you keep it running for about ten times longer. You’re trying. The worst is your hair. I have this beautiful, luxuriant hair, and I put stuff on. I put it in. Lather. I like lots of lather because I like it to come out extremely dry because it seems to be slightly thicker that way. And I lather up and then you turn on this crazy shower and the thing drip, drip, and you say, ‘I’m gonna be here for 45 minutes. What?’ They put restrictors and they put them on in places like here where there’s so much water you don’t know what to do with it. You know, it’s called rain. It rains a lot in certain places. But, now their idea, you know, did you see the other day? They just, I opened it up and they closed it again. I opened it, they close it, washing machines to wash your dishes. There is a problem. They don’t want you to have any water. They want no water.

There’s a strong similarity between this psychopathic idiocy and Trump’s “sharks vs. batteries” dementia demonstration. View the video here, but only if you have time and life to waste.

“The average American doesn’t think that we have to completely tear down the system and remake it. There are a lot of persuadable voters and  .  .  .  a lot of Democrats  .  .  .  who just want to see things make sense. They just don’t want to see the crazy stuff.”

Freedom and Dr. Seuss

POST 1088

Reality Check

Since Trump was shot, the Republicans/MAGAs are making noises about being kinder, losing the divisiveness and their cruelty. These are the people whose convention featured presenter after presenter engaging in world class divisiveness, faux masculinity, accusing Democrats of exactly the awful things righties have been doing. They had giant piles of MUGS (Made Up Gross S**t) designed for divisiveness and cruelty that had attendees foaming at the mouth.

Still, they made noise about how after the shooting Trump had torn up his speech in order to craft one designed for unity. That triggers a

POP QUIZ!
.

1. Try to remember the 2016 campaign, as Trump was making blisteringly phony accusations, taking credit for things he couldn’t even spell, much less create, telling lies and inciting hatred everywhere he went. We were assured by pundits that Trump would pivot and become presidential once in office and the gravity of presidential reality settled upon him. Check all that apply.

[  ] A. Trump “fixed” our immigration challenges by ripping thousands of infants and children from their mothers, caging the little ones without the staffing or supplies to care for them and with absolutely no way to reunite children with their parents. He explained that the cruelty was the point.

[  ] B. Trump knew more than the generals and people in the Intelligence agencies and ignored the President’s Daily Brief, blew off allies, embraced dictators and imperiled our safety by showing our top secrets to enemies. He promised our middle class great benefits, including massive new job opportunities and increased wages. Instead, he gave away $2 trillion, 87% of which went to already rich people and corporations. No new jobs were created and middle class income remained stagnant.

[  ] C. Trump did a turnaround and grew into the job of president, becoming a promoter of the Constitution and our democracy and transitioning into a world class statesman.

[  ] D. Trump can’t be believed when he says things like “kinder and gentler” or “unity,” nor when he denounces violence. That’s because if he is breathing, he is lying. Unity? From Trump, the Retribution King? Seriously?

Answer key: A, B, D. Trump couldn’t even understand answer C.

His aggrieved followers willingly support terminating the Constitution and then call themselves patriots. They’re easy marks for sales of Trump’s snake oil.

From Adam Kinzinger, June 26, 2024:

Today, we face an election about a singular, monumental issue: the very essence of our democracy. The question before us is clear—which of the two Candidates will stand unyielding in their commitment to preserve, protect, and defend our Constitution and strengthen our Democracy?

Kinzinger is right about the essence of the election. The answer to his question is: Anyone But Trump. As boyhood pal and occasional commenter to these posts Kirk Landers said, he’d sooner vote for Biden’s dogs, either the mean one or the nice one, or even a pet rock than for Trump. Kirk is a smart fellow.

Trump must never get his hands on any power greater than the flush handle of a prison toilet.

Up and down your November ballot,

Every one of the Democratic candidates will be on the right side of gun safety.
No Republican will.
.
Every one of the Democratic candidates will be on the right side of healthcare.
No Republican will.
.
Every one of the Democratic candidates will be on the right side of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and forgiveness of crushing student debt.
No Republican will.
.
Every one of the Democratic candidates will be on the right side of supporting our allies and opposing our adversaries..
No Republican will.
.
Every one of the Democratic candidates will be on the right side of the rule of law.
No Republican will.
.

The Republicans, the ones who hurl racist slurs at Kamala Harris, the ones who spew bizarre Biblical quotations that nobody understands, the ones who criticize her over plastic soda straws as though she is killing kittens and puppies – those Republicans – at night they come out from under the bridge where they live just to be cruel. They intend to be our overlords. That’s all they offer our country.

Yes, this election is that dangerously binary because

Freedom is Under Attack!

.

Other than strong nominees, our job is to defeat tyranny and preserve your rights, including your right to women’s healthcare; protection of things you already paid for, like Social Security and Medicare; plus the right not be be shot to death by a homicidal maniac brandishing combat weapons.

We must energize the electorate to vote for our country. I’m thinking of the 40% who don’t bother to show up on election day. Recently, I wrote about the need to light a fire under them. Insightful opinion writer Steve Sheffey agreed with me in his July 7 post. He must be very smart.

That energizing of the stay-at-homes requires our feet on the street to motivate and mobilize them. That way we get to keep our democracy and have a free and fair election in 2026. And another in 2028. Plus, we get to not get shot.

See Note #5 below.

Rhymes Of The Week

From Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss:

  • You have brains in your head
  • You have feet in your shoes.
  • You can steer yourself
  • Any direction you choose.

So, steer yourself to:

  • register voters
  • canvas in a swing state
  • write post cards reminding people to vote
  • phone voters with wake up calls about the threats to their rights and their freedom
  • donate to candidates who will preserve our democracy (Democrats only, because Republicans are extremists or suck ups to extremists)
  • invite neighbors to a discussion about what they want and how they’ll get it
  • post a sign on your lawn
  • volunteer as a poll watcher.

Steer yourself to action, because,

  • You have brains in your head,
  • You have feet in your shoes.
  • You don’t want to go cry
  • Lost Democracy Blues.

Passivity just won’t do if you want rights, freedom and safety. So, get going.

Our governance and electoral corruption and dysfunction and our ongoing mass murders are all of a piece, all the same problem with the same solution:

  • Fire the bastards!

POST 1085

Sleep Prevention Causal Factor

As reported in the New York Times on July 13, 2024:

Robert Pape, a political scientist at the University of Chicago who has studied American attitudes toward political violence since the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, conducted a nationwide poll on the topic last month. It found that 10 percent of those surveyed said that the “use of force is justified to prevent Donald Trump from becoming president.” A third of those who gave that answer also said they owned a gun.

Seven percent of those surveyed said they “support force to restore Trump to the presidency.” Half of them said they owned guns.

Note that 3% of all those surveyed both own guns and support presidential preference violence. That’s 3% on each side. That ought to keep you up at night.

The Assassination Attempt – Pop Quiz

Question No. 1 in 3 parts:

Setting aside the invitations into conspiracy theories suggesting Trump planned the shooting to gain additional victim sympathy; and ignoring the self-serving politicians saying there’s no room in our politics for violence, even as they vote against every gun safety bill; and pretending that you don’t see the politicians trying to save their own asses from the bullseye of the next pissy sniper; and ignoring Trump’s consistent championing of violence and retribution; and ignoring the Second Amendment “cold, dead hands” extremists who prove how tough they are by the size of the arsenal in their basements;

How many guns have at last been properly locked up so that wacko sons like Adam Lanza can’t get their hands on Mom & Dad’s assault rifles and pistols? Answer: zero.

Who thinks our kids will be safe when they go back to school next month or that Biden doesn’t risk a copy cat shooter between now and November? Answer: nobody.

Where is there anything in support of safety but the next round of useless thoughts and prayers and the usual Second Amendment justification blather? Answer: nowhere.

Question No. 2 in 4 parts:

Millions are horrified because a former president apparently was slightly wounded. But is his life more important than the lives of:

20 little first grade kids and six teachers? Be sure to check with the parents, as well as the first responders who had to confront that butchery and help to clean it up.

The MAGA Hypocrisy Meter

Or 10 worshipers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston?

Or 17 at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh?

Or the 17,761 killed or wounded by firearms already this year?

Answer to all: No.

Please, pundits, politicians and gun rights extremists, spare me your abhorrent hypocrisy. You may now go back to fondling your bump stock and skulking in the woods wearing your camos, pretending to be Rambo or a patriotic member of “a well regulated Militia.”

But you aren’t. And you aren’t a justified urban crusader or a victim “hitting back.” You’re just a guy puffed up by guns. Here’s what you must learn.

Everyone understands what guns do. They send slugs of lead through the air at very high speed and make often fatal holes in human bodies. That’s why people respect guns and what they can do. Here’s the “but.”

When you’re strutting around with your assault rifle or your semi-automatic pistol, people respect your guns because they know what they can do. But nobody respects you. You’re just a tough guy wannabee. A poser. A guy who thinks there is a short cut to respect.

NEWSFLASH: There isn’t.

ACTION ALERT: Lose the guns and start being respectful and you’ll begin to be worthy of respect.

If instead you kill or wound someone, even a presidential candidate, your fellow tough guy posers will high five you. The rest of the world will know that you’re just a loser and an a**hole.

“Grift! Grift! Grift!”

The Political Perversion of the Assassination Attempt

From Steve Schmidt, Next Comes The Revenge:

“Trump’s [“Fight, Fight, Fight!” is] tough and iconic in the instant of the response [to the attempted assassination], but who exactly is supposed to be fighting whom? What we are seeing is the use of a criminal act, an evil act, and an assault on our democracy as a justification for calls for more violence.”

Which surprises nobody.

Trump is a showman, so he instantly knew how to use a ding on his ear to promote himself. He has no concern for danger or harm to others.

If you are a supporter of Trump and you follow his raised fist, tough guy “Fight! Fight! Fight!” directive, you are the problem.

Gun Violence And Democracy

From reader Frank Levy:

[Saturday’s] assassination attempt on DJT will almost guarantee his election in November. He will be able to raise massive amounts of money off the attempt on his life and his previously bored and maybe unmotivated followers will want revenge for the affront to their leader and will vote in numbers we have never seen before. And all we have is sleepy Joe as our candidate. We know Joe is a true patriot. He loves America. He can prove it beyond reproach by letting someone, almost anyone but himself, carry the banner for saving our democracy in November.

That “almost guarantee his election” thing – we have to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Older Boomers may recall the pop song You Don’t Know What You’ve Got Until You Lose It. Even if you don’t remember it, most of us have experienced renewed appreciation for something or someone after they’re gone and when we’re feeling the pain of loss.

It’s going to hurt really bad when our rights and our freedoms and our democracy are gone. Trump and the MAGAs are promising to take them away and it’s extremely unsafe to ignore their treasonous words. That’s why we have to saddle up and ride to the rescue of our democracy. We have to STOP THE STEAL!
