Winning

POST 1267

Are You Sick of Winning Yet?

Food prices are up.

Healthcare cost is up.

Energy – gas for your tank, electricity and heating oil – all up

We’re abusing, disappearing and murdering our own citizens.

We were told they were getting rid of the worst of the worst, but 86% of the people they/we have locked up are innocent of any serious crime.

We started an illegal war for no clear reason, there is no apparent way out of it and our allies won’t support us.

We’ve angered all of our allies through insults, tariffs, threats and Russia coddling and we’ve created massive international distrust, to the point that over 40 nations are banding together economically and leaving us behind.

Instead of creating millions of great, high paying manufacturing jobs, we’ve lost 100,000 of them and thousands of service jobs, too.

Trump promised the opposite of all the things on this list and more, yet here we are in this worsening quagmire of betrayal, a lowering standard of living and threats to our nation.

I’m sick for sure, but what ails me isn’t due to winning. And I’m confident that a strong majority of the 77 million voters for Trump in 2024 did not vote for all this “winning.” In their heart of hearts they know they were duped by a con man. Having to admit they were wrong, though, or that they’ve been played for fools is a very bitter pill and millions won’t ever swallow it.

But some have and they’re ready to leave the chaos and brutality behind.

About That Illegal War

The arc of the Strait of Hormuz – prime beach property

Now we have 4,000 U.S. Marines on the way, ready to do a ground invasion of Iran. This is the “boots on the ground” thing that Trump told us over and over that he wouldn’t do. Oh, it’s just to secure the Strait of Hormuz, he’ll say. We’ll only invade a little bit of Iran.

What do you think the Iranians will do when their homeland is invaded? Do you think Trump and his idiot Secretary of Defense will stop the troops on the beaches, that they won’t send them to occupy the entire country? The landing pattern at Dover AFB is about to become very busy.

And still the Republicans holding Congress hostage sit on their hands. I think we should draft their sons, daughters and all their grandchildren past their 18th birthday and deploy them to land on the beaches of Iran. Under that threat, do you think these congressional Republicans could at last find their spines and do their job to check and balance, to stand up to this lawless, murderous president?

If they did stand up and stand strong, that would be winning. It would also be a new experience for all of us.

Quote of the Week

From James Madison, Founder and 4th President of the United States, courtesy of regular reader MG.

“As a man is said to have a right to his property, he may be equally said to have a property in his rights.”

This is offered as your rights are systematically being taken from you. What do you suppose the Founders would say to all of Trump’s crushing of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, to which they pledged their Lives, their Fortunes and their sacred Honor?

Trump could never understand that integrity, especially the honor part. He’d call them suckers and losers. But you get it.

Observe And Think

Trump puts his empathy for our fallen on display. He says he just played his best round of golf.

The next few times you hear Trump giving a speech, rally, press conference or interview, note that every topic, every event, every squishy policy comment, every response to every question is converted into the issue of money. He bypasses all focus on moral choices, doing the right thing, supporting the American people, caring about anyone but himself, protecting and defending and simple right versus wrong. If he touches on such topics, he will convert them instantly into a comment about money.

To him, everything is about money. That’s why he changes an opportunity for caring about our fallen military people, a chance to express empathy for their forlorn loved ones, into something monetary, like wearing his promotional ball cap as caskets of our fallen in flag draped coffins passed by. For Trump, everything is an opportunity for money. Winning and his presidency are solely about amassing cash.

War, Consequences and Fantasy

POST 1265

What Will Iran Do?

If you had been in charge in Iran for the past 14 months and had heard Trump’s bluster and saber rattling about attacking your country, what preparations would you make? Surely, you’d be thinking about defense for your country and your people. What else?

The Iranians are a proud people. Having now been attacked without provocation, it’s reasonable to assume that they might want something Trump understands: retribution. There’s no way Iran will be satisfied just to have been a punching bag for the West’s military adventure. They can’t beat the U.S. and Israel militarily, so they would look for some asymmetrical way to hit back. One thing they do well is to sow terror. Indeed, it’s what they do best.

They have already attacked our military installations in the region, killing 7 of our people and injuring over 130. They’ve sent missiles and drones into Israel and clogged the Strait of Hormuz. They can only continue their attacks until their weapons supply is exhausted. Then they will do something else.

One thing they could do is to plant explosives, maybe even dirty bombs, around the U.S. and near U.S. embassies. They could place them in schools, hospitals and in government buildings. They could attack our infrastructure and our cities, with these explosives to be detonated as they desire. They could murder a lot of Americans and hobble our nation.

Their attacks would serve more than their hunger for retribution. Terrorist attacks could be a powerful trigger to permanently empower American authoritarians, our home grown fascists, to declare martial law, to destroy our democracy and to end our civil rights. They could destroy our way of life. They will believe that destroying “the great Satan” is a great and religious victory, a tribute to Allah.

What kind of corner do you think we’re painting ourselves into with this illegal, punitive and pointless war? Put your notions in the Comments section below.

If you want to stretch your brain further, consider what Vladimir Putin  and President Xi may do, as Trump systematically shifts global advantage to Russia and China. Trump is tolerating Putin’s providing Iran sophisticated targeting of American assets in the Middle East to blow up our hardware and to kill our people. Trump has also shifted much of our Pacific military might away from Taiwan, opening the door to Xi to walk through. What a fine time this is to be America’s adversary, thanks to Donald Trump.

To be fair, Trump’s deadly Iran folly is a brilliant move for Trump himself. He’s taking our eyes away from ICE cruelty and murder and from the Epstein affair and Trump’s part in it. It’s what con men do. Damage to our nation and the crushing of justice and the death of Americans? Big Trump yawn. He’d rather talk about his gold drapes and his “You’ve never seen anything like this” useless ballroom.

Ever and always, it’s all about Trump. He has no room in his narcissism for the welfare of the American people or the Iranian people or our servicemen and women. And as his dementia and other maladies progress, expect worse, especially because our Gallery of Cowardice Republicans are invertebrates. They whisper in private about how bad Trump is and then vote for whatever he wants in perfectly choreographed goose step. That will ensure many casualties, both in Iran and in America.

Selling The War With Brainless Hoo-Ah

Top officials in our government seem to think that war is nothing more than a video game. They thump chests while mixing extremely dangerous actions with toxic and murderous masculinity, as though war is just fantasy that doesn’t count in the real world. Hey, it doesn’t hurt Trump or his department heads, so why shouldn’t we war whoop?

Watch this official White House video promoting the awesomeness, the “Meanest S.O.B. in the valley of the shadow of death,” the absolute power of American might and our endless toxic testosterone.** And watch this video linked from Sunday’s post. In it Pete Hegseth, Secretary of War, Destruction and Primal Screaming, shows how way cool war looks by mixing video from the actual bombing of Iran with video game footage. It’s not clear if one of the actual bomb explosions in Tehran shown in his video was the one that killed 175 little school girls. No problem, because Pete just doesn’t care about them or the over 1,200 Iranians already killed. It isn’t at all clear that Hegseth even cares about our 7 wear dead, either.

Keep in mind that those brain-free video dispatches aren’t from some cretinous, online troller. They are our official government cretinous dispatches.

They think they’re selling the war to the American people so that we’ll be silent as they create more death and destruction. They think that chest thumping is enough and that we won’t notice that they have no objectives, there is no strategy, there is no exit plan, there isn’t a definition of what comes next and there is not even a vague notion of what victory would look like. Trump says he demands “unconditional surrender,” perhaps to send a mothballed battleship to the port of Bandar Abbas to have surrender documents signed there. Idiocy.

Trump has invented a war so that he could be a war president, with all of us rallying ’round the flag and him. But a majority of Americans disapprove of this war and 74% oppose sending ground troops into Iran.

One thing is clear: sending U.S. ground troops into Iran will be a disastrous, murderous blunder. That, though, won’t stop President Bone Spurs. We’ll need the Congress to stop him. How’s that going to happen?

This Trump administration is the cabal that has:

– imperiled our economy

– raised the cost of living for everyone

– has not just killed job growth but has cost over 100,000 manufacturing jobs

– brutalized, imprisoned, tortured and killed innocent American citizens, legal residents and immigrants who have done no wrong

And now it has started a war that immediately spread to be a regional war with no solution even at the horizon. What are we going to do about it.

We’re So Sorry . . .

POST 1262

We Interrupt This Interrupted Title To Bring You This

As reported by news sources yesterday, The Great and Powerful President Bone Spurs, the one who is always glad to send others to suffer and die, our “No New Wars* leader, has picked yet another fight with Iran. He lit the fuse in the middle of the night so that nobody could yell “FIRE!” and slow him down.

He did this in spite of Iran having done no harm to the United States and posing no immediate threat to the United States. Can you say “unprovoked” boys and girls?

This five times deferred President Bone Spurs (which deferrals ensured that others were put at risk, not himself) is promising to deliver regime change in Iran, a skill at which the United States sucks. That is and he is, to use his own term, a loser.

As of this writing we can report that upon being attacked, Iran immediately launched missiles and drones at Israel and at U.S. installations in other countries in the area, thus threatening to expand this war, possibly to engulf the entire region. We have not yet heard a casualty count, but it’s certain that the detonations of Iran’s munitions on U.S. bases plus those of American and Israeli munitions in Tehran and elsewhere in Iran will produce a large number of mangled bodies, some of them dead.

This president can’t even spell “strategic,” much less think strategically. His rationale for this military action changes daily, often multiple times within one speech. Just last week he repeated his June 22, 2025 claim that we had “completely and totally obliterated” Iran’s nuclear enrichment capability. Yesterday he announced to the world that we attacked Iran this time to “obliterate it’s nuclear enrichment capability.”

So, pay no attention to his stated goals for attacking Iran, as they are wobbly at best and most are unattainable, at least as a result of U.S. air strikes. Plus, he refused to obey the Constitution and get Congressional approval for his illegal war of choice.

Instead, we focus on reasons President Pedophile might want you to be thinking about Iran just now. Don’t do it. Don’t let him distract you with his march of death.

The illegal Iran war is his WAG THE DOG. Do not be wagged. Focus on his law breaking and violating of little girls.

Top Orange Moron Quote Of The Illegal Iran War – So Far

“The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!”

Yeah, he really did say that, just like that, Bomb them into peace.

As always, there is no clear end game, no off ramp. There is nothing but muscle flexing and posturing with no regard for tomorrow.

.  .  .  That Our Leaders Hate America

It’s so sad that people in elective and appointed offices don’t like us. They hate us, really, or at least they scorn us. I mean, when they beat the hell out of citizens and legal residents and send lots of them into cattle pen prisons hundreds of miles away and even send them to foreign black rendition sites to be tortured, well, no way they’d do that if they love America and Americans.

No way these officials would direct ICE to profile people who look Hispanic or speak Spanish. They wouldn’t tell these Gestapo goons to assault people holding anti-ICE signs and throw them to the ground, zip tie them and throw them in the back of an unmarked van and refuse them any rights.

And surely they wouldn’t allow any ICE agent to hassle those who have committed the crime of being a citizen while Black. No way they would completely ignore habeas corpus rights or the requirement to have a warrant signed by a judge to enter anyone’s house, arrest people and lock them up entirely without probable cause. No, people who love America would never do such things.

Yet here we are with all that fascist brutality and more going on, with millions of us afraid, many of us wondering how we’ll feed our kids. And we’re hoping against hope that there isn’t a major health issue with anyone in the family, because now that our health insurance support is gone, one illness or injury will put us into bankruptcy.

We believe in justice – all of us do – and the people who are supposed to be going after the awful offenders are instead covering up their crimes. The very worst of their crimes are against little girls. And our Department of Justice has turned into a Department of Injustice, turning its back on victims of rape and sex trafficking. That isn’t the America we love. Whatever happened to Truth, Justice and the American Way?

And what are we supposed to think when the head of the FBI used the agency’s jet to go to the Olympics and drink beer like he was a dumb kid at his first frat party? Or when the so-called “White House Border Czar” is caught accepting a $50,000 bribe in an FBI sting operation? And then the DOJ claims there’s no case against him! Really, Attorney General? What are we supposed to think? Surely, we all see that you don’t love America and what it stands for.

And what are we doing with anyone in a position called “czar,” anyway? The czars were Russian despots and cruelty dispensers.

Seriously, what are we supposed to do when our people in charge of public health are either too stupid to understand dozens and dozens of research reports that show that vaccines do not cause autism, or they just lie about it, indulging their joy of dishonesty? What they tell us to do is to refuse disease prevention and life protecting vaccines for our kids. That has now led to hundreds of potentially lethal measles infections and kids dying, as well as a resurgence of polio. These  officials are actually promoting our backsliding into the Dark Ages.

And our symbols of the America we love – they tore down the East Wing of the White House! They obliterated it so that a gigantic ballroom for which we have no use could be built. And they paved over the rose garden that was planted by Jackie Kennedy. And they paraded military hardware down Pennsylvania Avenue like it was Moscow on May Day. And the Kennedy Center has been venally renamed and has now been closed because patriotic American artists refuse to perform in such a grossly named facility.

The wonderful resurgence of manufacturing jobs we were promised has instead turned into the loss of over 100,000 manufacturing jobs and job growth overall has sputtered to insignificance. What are we to do with that reality as jobs become ever more scarce?

We keep being told that inflation is going down – “way down” – but the prices of the things we need in order to live are going up. And our wages – they were supposed to be going up but instead real wages are pretty much flat lined. How are we supposed to care for our kids?

We Americans are pretty much welded to values like honesty, which is almost dead in the hearts of so many of our leaders and we are all suffering as a result of that. That’s why we’re so sorry that our leaders hate America. We still love America, which is why we are more than sorry.

Click me – then follow the instructions.

We’re as mad as hell and we’re not going to take this anymore!

We’ve known since grade school that the way to stop bullies is to punch them in the nose. Fists are on the way to the noses of the people who have been lying to us, cheating us, hurting us and betraying us. It will come in the form of brutal results for them in the next elections. Every one of them better update their résumé now.

Because we do know that these people hate America and Americans. We do know about the hateful things these leaders are doing to America. Unlike them, we love America and we know what to do about their betrayals of us and this land we love.

Click here for an Associated Press fact check, unmasking Trump’s claims of America’s glowing greatness for what they are: frauds. It sure doesn’t look like that leader loves you.

Big Brother At Our Doorstep

POST 1191

The Swinders

Do you remember Peter Thiel – the billionaire PayPal and FaceBook guy? More significantly, maybe you remember him from his being JD Vance’s sugar daddy, giving that loser a fund manager position and then bankrolling Vance into the Senate. Thiel’s support culminated in Vance white washing all the trash talking he did of Trump (remember his Hitler comparisons when he was a “never Trumper”?) and getting the VP job by means of Thiel’s hand on his butt shoving him there.

Elon Musk and his juvenile delinquent flying monkeys stole our personal data from Social Security and other agencies. They sucked up all of your information – bank accounts, debts – everything – and dumped it in the lap of – guess who? – Peter Thiel and his AI company. I suspect that Musk kept copies for himself. This is true Big Brother intrusion into our lives and there is likely nothing any of us can do about that invasion of our privacy.

Of course, you smelled a rat when Musk was claiming to be fighting waste, fraud and abuse but he never found any waste, fraud or abuse. He promised to save us $2 trillion but actually barely broke even in his rampage of destruction. The rat you smelled was the theft of all of our information and its transfer to Thiel. It was for the benefit of Trump, Musk, Thiel, rich, greedy guys and lovers of dictatorship. That is the real reason for DOGE. Just like the Republican Big Barfy Betrayal Bill, it’s about sending your money to rich people and corporations.

You’ve been swindled by these thieves who invite Big Brother into our house.

This robber baron horror story is spelled out in Robert Reich’s piece, The Most Dangerous Corporation in the World.

Health Beat

From STAT:

79%

That’s the proportion of U.S. adults who say parents should be required to vaccinate their kids against preventa[ble] diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella in order to attend school, according to a new, nationally representative poll from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the de Beaumont Foundation.

You say you don’t want your kids to be vaccinated against these highly contagious diseases, as well as polio and smallpox? Fine. Just move to an unpopulated offshore island and never set foot on this continent again so that your family cannot infect the rest of us, cause a pandemic and make many people die.

While that offshore island cure for anti-vaxxers is, perhaps, extreme, 4 out of 5 adults in this country, including 68% of Republicans, pretty much agree about vaccinating our children. The question is why Secretary “Brain Worm” Kennedy doesn’t get it. Oh right: he has a brain worm.

And he’s a member of the DKS* wing of the Big Brother clan of cruelty.

Bombing Update

From Steve Schmidt, Headed Back To 2003 (when Dubya lied us into war in Iraq):

“CNN is scum, MSNBC is scum, the New York Times is scum. They’re bad people, they’re sick.”

— Donald Trump, June 25, 2025

Donald Trump’s Iran attack was a failure.

The Iranian nuclear program was not destroyed.

Here is what happened.

The United States used more than half of its bunker-busting arsenal of GBU-57s to obliterate a mountain top, and Little Marco, Champagne Pete, and JD Vance got to appear in a prime time episode of national disaster television behind a demented old man filled with malice, delusions and venom.

Here is what was achieved.

Nothing — except for making the Iranian regime more dangerous.

  • That is what a diabolical Big Brother does and that puts us all at risk.
Why Is All This Happening?

From Robert Reich:

.  .  .  Republicans, who hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, won’t defend their constitutional prerogatives. America is becoming a dictatorship because there are not even 4 Republican senators out of 53, nor 3 Republican representatives out of 220, with enough courage and integrity to stand up for Congress’s constitutional responsibilities.

That is a major piece of how Big Brother has come to be at our doorstep. That is why all this is happening.
.
Hope

Late last Sunday afternoon a huge thunderstorm rolled through our area. I sat on my front porch and enjoyed the show, the distant crashes of thunder, the torrents of rain overwhelming the roof gutters and splashing onto the ground, the rivers flowing fast in the street – it was glorious.

Then almost suddenly the rain slowed and bright sunshine bathed the area, sparkling off the drops on the leaves of the trees.

Wait: rain and sunshine – there had to be a rainbow somewhere.

I got up from my comfortable chair on the porch and went out into the street, turned my back to the sun and right there, low in the sky was the rainbow, just as they always are when the sun shines through rain.

We are living in a time of dread over all the harm and cruelty and the breaking of our laws, our customs and our hearts. Many people – perhaps you – feel a profound sense of hopelessness. Well, here’s something for you.

There is no executive order to arrest and deport rainbows. No bunker buster bomb can obliterate them and there is no tariff to pay to enjoy them.

The laws of physics haven’t been repealed. Light still refracts through raindrops. The science teachers who told us about that are still here and firm in their knowledge, even in the face of our science deniers and book banners/burners.

Science still works. It’s like bedrock. It stands ready and able to support us. Much as the greedy, power hungry thieves want to shake our bedrock, we can stop them from upsetting our country. Our beliefs, our values and our spirit stand strong.

So get off the porch and into the street. You did it on NO KINGS DAY. There still are rainbows right here in America.

POST 1189

I’m writing in the hours following the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear and missile facilities and the Iranian response of their announced-in-advance missile attack on the vast U.S. military facility in Qatar. There will surely be more surprises to come, engineered by one of the world’s most awful regimes and more surprises from the other of the world’s most awful regimes. We wait for shoes to drop.

Let’s set aside the typical Trumpian stupidities:

“We’re not at war with Iran; we’re at war with Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

His bombastic claims: “We obliterated their nuclear facilities,” which bomb damage assessment experts have shown to be false.

The idiotic flip-flopping denials: “We’re not after regime change,” then “Make Iran Great Again” through “regime change.”

Let’s instead have a look at serious issues that serious minded leaders would commonly contemplate seriously with advice from serious minded advisors. Not that such advice might be seriously considered by Trump.

Whether you think the attack on Iran was the right thing to do or you see a blisteringly dumb move that is a probable prelude to something very bad happening, that attack will have many consequences.

It isn’t at all likely that, having taken a public drubbing, Iran will let go of its hostilities and go all golden retriever puppy with love for the twin devils, Israel and the U.S. They will want to hit back and are far more likely to be willing to make war than negotiate. It’s about venting rage and proving how tough they are.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is 86 years old and is not politically strong. He’s already offered recommendations for a successor, including his son, which further complicates the possibility of negotiations and the calculus of predicting what actions that country may take. We’ll leave that speculation to our well informed intelligence people, sadly led by second-raters who owe their suck-up jobs to Trump patronage. Trump will ignore all of them.

What we know is that saving face is critically important to this Iranian regime and to the culture of the country. Nobody reacts well to humiliation and even Khamenei’s detractors in the streets of Tehran will want to hit back, especially because for them this is a holy war. Did anyone at the White House, the Defense, State, Homeland Security or the Intelligence Departments consider what would happen on Day 2?

You know this from at least as far back as Colin Powell invoking the Pottery Barn rule about war: You break it, you own it. And now we own this one.

Here are just a few examples of how the Iranians might strike back.

  1. Physics and chemistry tell us that their 60% enriched uranium cannot be used as is to make a traditional nuclear bomb. But it can be used to make dirty bombs – common explosives laced with radiologically hot material. They could smuggle IEDs or bombs into any country and detonate them in crowded cities. Use your imagination to identify which places would be near the top of their hit list. Dirty bombs don’t have nearly the explosive power of nuclear bombs, but they can make a huge radius of land uninhabitable for hundreds of years.
  2. If they have sleeper cells in the U.S., they can be activated to do damage to us physically and psychologically. If you think we distrust one another now, just wait until Iranian sabotage has occurred in the U.S., some Americans have been killed and you’re suspecting every stranger you see of being a murderer.
  3. They can mine the Strait of Hormuz (see these maps) to shut down shipping of gas, oil and other goods. 20% of global petroleum output travels that narrow stretch of water and shutting it down will drive up oil prices globally and likely tank Trump’s economic agenda.
  4. They can attack U.S. forces in the area, as they did in their retaliatory attack in Qatar on Monday. Given that no substantial damage was done, this was likely intended solely for domestic consumption, a public beating of chests and a saving of face. That may likely prove to be a self-destructive action, but proud, angry people might dismiss the cost to themselves and approve yet more attacks.
  5. They can fire barrages of missiles and drones at Israel, assuming they still have substantial stockpiles.
  6. They can task their tech geniuses to create destructive cyber attacks that disrupt our power grids, businesses, defense capabilities and more.

If they did any of those things, what would our U.S. dictator wannabe do? He’s an amoral, irrational and self-serving narcissist whose mania requires that he be seen as strong, most strongly, and always right. He would insist that any Iranian aggression be countered massively. Bigly. Like nothing anyone has ever seen. There aren’t too many choices available for an all-about-me tyrant trying to show that he can pee higher on the fire hydrant than the other dog.

  1. He could order massive bombing of all Iranian infrastructure. “Bomb ’em back to the stone age” was a very popular phrase after 911, when our proud, angry people wanted retribution. So was Sen. John McCain’s “Bomb, bomb, bomb – bomb, bomb Iran” in 2008, wanting for us to show the world what tough guys we were.
  2. Trump could order 300,000 – maybe 500,000 – troops to invade Iran. That will be a forever war that will kill hundreds of thousands of people, including tens of thousands of our military men and women. We will build an Iran War Memorial on the National Mall. Trump will get to play wartime president to burnish his orange ego. But critically, he will ignore the flag draped caskets carrying suckers and losers, as they arrive at Dover, DE.

It doesn’t appear that anyone is considering what comes next, most dangerously, the President.

Will Russia, China and North Korea supply Iran with war matériel and scientific know how? If they do, what will we do?

If we learn that we didn’t “obliterate” Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities (we didn’t), will Trump order more bombings?

Given their stockpiles of enriched uranium and scientific know how, if Iran continues to refuse to negotiate, what will we do? What will Israel do? What might Iran do?

What will we do to win hearts and minds of Iranians? We weren’t too good at that in Iraq or Afghanistan.

We’ve seen this movie before. We know the plot and that it takes decades to end this bad movie. It will cost thousands of lives and massive treasure that creates trillions of dollars of debt that will never be paid off.

Trump will be long gone when the reality of his ever-expanding war dawns on us. By then there will be someone else in the White House to blame for his war folly. Just like when Dubya was gone and Obama and Biden took the heat for exiting his Iraq and Afghanistan war failures.

Like I said, we’ve seen this movie before. The question for us now is whether we remember the lessons of that movie before a lot of people get killed and whether Congress has the backbone to dial down the madness. Indeed, have we learned anything at all?

From his post on Monday, When Incompetence Goes To War, Dan Rather, with his many decades of reporting and his experience in too many wars, gets the last word.

Truth IS the first casualty of war.

The first things you hear often are untrue, and so are many of the things you hear later.

Wars are by their very nature chaotic and unpredictable. What you most expect frequently does not happen; what you least expect often does.

Up close and personal, wars are almost unbelievably savage. The television screen and the printed word do not come close to conveying their harsh realities.

An Outrageous Proposal for October 7

POST 1108

Most of us know that an Israeli cease fire won’t get the hostages back, won’t curtail Hamas’ terrorism, won’t stop Hezbollah from firing rockets into northern Israel, won’t stop the Houthis from firing ballistic missiles into Israel from Yemen, won’t stop Iran from firing drones and ballistic missiles at Israeli cities and won’t stop Iran from funding all of these terrorists. There will be no cease fire trade for hostages because giving up the hostages will eliminate Hamas’ bargaining chips. These things are real world truths, in contrast to the beliefs of well meaning but simple minded college students, especially those who have turned their empathy into hatred.

Israel had to take action both to recover hostages – they retrieved over half of them – and they had to defend against Hamas and cripple it in order to prevent yet more terrorism. That was made far more complicated by Hamas.

It is a fact that Hamas positions its terrorists and its weapons among the civilian Palestinian population in Gaza – in hospitals, schools and apartment buildings. That ensured that Israeli retaliation and military pressure against Hamas would injure and kill massive numbers of otherwise innocent Palestinians. For those needing to point a finger of blame for thousands of Palestinian casualties, point your finger at Hamas. They wanted and got massive world sympathy through their cruel manipulations that caused the deaths of those Palestinian mothers and children.

More bombs, missiles and drones will not get anyone peace or land. More murders of hostages will only trigger continuing cycles of retribution. “From the river to the sea” is a fantasy that serves only to inflame passions and cause more death.

The war has widened, there are no indications of anything likely to get better any time soon and the world is poised in anticipation of an all out regional war if all parties continue to behave as they have. Clearly, if things are to improve, something must change. Here is my outrageous proposal.

I propose – no, I invite, plead, beseech – Prime Minister Netanyahu to go on the world stage and invite Iran and representatives of the Palestinians into negotiations to make a permanent peace. Perhaps the Egyptians, Qataris and Jordanians can facilitate such a process.

Netanyahu must offer Israeli support for creating a sovereign Palestinian state and be willing to remove and relocate Israeli settlers from the West Bank. He must be willing to share Jerusalem. In short, he must come to these talks prepared to give up a great deal in exchange for getting everything Israelis have hoped for since 1948.

We have seen that fierce warriors on all sides are a hindrance, not a help. It is time for fierce statesmanship and a new kind of courage, the courage to not fight. Perhaps things are so awful now and so threatening to everyone that we can move past the chest thumping, intransigence, self-righteousness, the threatening and the contest to win the biggest victim award and at last bring peace to all.

Yes, that’s outrageous. If you have a better idea, I’d love to hear it. So would all the mothers and children in the Middle East.

Criminals

Did You Ever Wonder .  .  .

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) tells Fox News that he was grateful to have been in Washington instead of helping his constituents in Florida during Hurricane Ian. After the barrier islands off Fort Myers disappeared into the ocean he said, “Just think how much worse the hurricane would have been if global warming were real.”

.  .  . how the former Criminal-in-Chief has gotten away with so much obvious lawlessness for so long? Here’s an excerpt from Sheila Markin’s explainer, One Two Punch for Donald Trump:

Of course, the reason he has gotten away with so many travesties is that he was shielded by Republicans who were eager to use his power as president to get power for themselves and benefits for their ultra wealthy funders [emphasis mine]: tax cuts for the wealthy, right wing judges on the federal bench to protect corporate interests, culture war victories, a border wall instead of a reasonable border policy, the end of women’s reproductive rights to keep evangelicals loyal voters and an undercurrent of threat from white supremacy mixed with militias to keep low information aggrieved white men happy. Next, Trump knows how to talk out of both sides of his mouth as every good crime boss does, which allows him plausible deniability. And third, it takes time for investigations to be carried out when they are done thoroughly, factually, and investigators follow the rules which they must do to have an unbeatable case.

More is needed to explain Trump’s years of alleged money laundering, stiffing of contractors and lawyers, bribing skin dancers and calling it a campaign expense and far more, but you get the idea. Meanwhile, I find the part about his Republican shields (a.k.a. cowards and jellyfish) to be most interesting, what with the lying and reality denial. If you want to understand more of how lying became not just acceptable to, but required of Republicans, be sure to read Carlos Lozada’s piece, The Big Joke That Became the Big Lie.

Lozada defines the Big Joke as, “the idea that American politics is, in essence, a joke, and that it can be treated as such without consequence.” He goes on to give examples of the Big Joke, as when,

“politicians publicly defend positions they privately reject”

“they give up on the challenge of governing the country for the rush of triggering the enemy” [“own the Libs”]

“they intone that they must address the very fears they have encouraged or manufactured among their constituents”

“their off-the-record smirks signal that they don’t really mean what they just said or did”

Read the piece. I promise that you will not laugh at the joke.

Meanwhile, the good news is that our very own supremely bad guy – the former Criminal-in-chief – is going down in at least a half dozen really nasty ways. Be patient and be ready to celebrate. I already have a special post prepared for his first of many courtroom defeats. And that’s no joke.

Speaking of Criminals

Republicans have entered a new phase of national sabotage by threatening to refuse to fund the government unless President Biden and the Democrats reverse all their policies.

Yes, really: All!

This refusal to raise the debt ceiling is a favorite bludgeon Republicans use to try to get their way with Democrats. Basically, they threaten to hold their breath until they turn blue (fine with me) unless they get what they want. They’ve been playing this self-destructive game since Newt “Mr. Amoral” Gingrich was Speaker of the House in the 1990s, slyly fingering his never executed “Contract With America”. He and his phony, power grabbing posse acted as though there weren’t always a contract, an obligation of Congress to the American people. But there was and there is. Back then Clinton was president and he was a Democrat, so the extremist Republicans shut down the government. Twice.

To review, raising the debt ceiling (done over 100 times since it was first a thing roughly 100 years ago) is simply allowing our government to pay its debts that it has already incurred. It’s like paying your credit card bill. Raising the debt ceiling is not more government spending. It’s avoiding being a deadbeat. Congress did it 18 times under Reagan and 3 times under Trump. But last year under Democratic President Biden the Republicans refused to pay our bills and they’re refusing again this year. Are you seeing a pattern?

But that’s not important to Republicans. Their propeller hats are spinning wildly now, as are their eyeballs, glorying in this wonderful opportunity to show everyone how testosterone-y they are.

The Senate passed a short-term extension of government funding to December 16. During the week prior to that date look for a most entertaining spectacle of Republicans wildly grabbing the big gun to see who can shoot more holes in America’s foot, telling the world that we are a most undependable nation. “Don’t trust us,” they’ll tell the world, “because we’ll Trump you with non-payment of our debts.”

This is yet another example of why Republicans must be defeated at the polls. That happens in just 37 days and you are the engine that will make that happen.

Speaking of Criminals – Again

22-year-old Mahsa Amini died while in the custody of the Morality Police in Iran following her arrest for improperly wearing the hijab last month. As I understand it (let me know if I have this wrong), the requirement for wearing the hijab is based on the well known fact that the very sight of a woman’s hair can cause men to go mad with lust. Anything they might do under such a spell is the fault of the uncovered woman. It’s quite like the rapist’s defense, claiming that the way she was dressed or acted caused his assault.

Shifting to a national perspective, our insurrectionist thugs and our Republicans would have us believe that their malfeasance, like sedition, is someone else’s fault.

I think I’ve been clear on these pages that accountability – personal responsibility – is a real thing and that there is a price that must be paid for wrongdoing.

So, MAGA boys, even if you think there are elites controlling poor, oppressed you, even if you’re the most absolutist pickup truck driving, AR-15 toting, Jim Crow loving cowboy, you may not threaten, attack or kill others and claim that the elites or Democrats made you do it. You’re just a criminal thug blaming someone else for your crimes.

Hey Merrick! Make those guys pay the price.

On the other hand, perhaps we can export the “blame somebody else” types to Iran. I’m sure they’ll love it there. Maybe the rest of the Republicans will go, too. They can blame any women who are not wearing the hijab and get away with their cruelty.

Hypocrisy of the Week

“President Biden, I take back all the idiotic and false things I’ve said about you. Okay. Now that we’re buddies, how about some emergency help for Florida? What if I throw in returning those Venezuelans to San Antonio? I could ditch the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, if that would help and I can pressure Florida school boards to stop burning books. What do you say?”

Ron DeSantis was elected to Congress in 2013 and proudly voted against a $9.7 billion federal flood insurance assistance package for the victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. Now, as governor of Florida, he’s begging President Biden for emergency help for his state. DeSantis explained, “We all need to work together, regardless of party lines.”

Funny how things work differently when DeSantis is the one in need. Insert your own label for him in the Comments section below.

DeSantis is a “drown government” guy. Leave everything to the private sector – “the market,” he believes. I’m just wondering what part of “the market” is going to pony up $90 billion to glue Florida back together and help all those suffering people.

I Really Need Your Help With This

Reading time – 3:49  .  .  .

My pal John Calia (find him here) describes himself as a libertarian. Because I’m a progressive we have lots to talk about and frequently do so. Last week we had an email exchange that eventually reached the shoulder shrug point because even together we were unable to find much in the way of solid answers.

This series of exchanges was sparked by an essay in The New York Times that took a look at what it is that causes voters the most heartburn about Donald Trump. Public polling shows that his persona, separate from his policies, is a huge source of angst.

Okay, nothing new there, as this issue deftly crosses our political divide. But the comparison itself set me to asking the key question: What are Trump’s policies? Let’s start with an historical benchmark.

During the Cold War the foreign policy of all presidents included Soviet/communist containment, and the expansion of democracy. With hindsight we can pick apart the successes & failures and the value of those policies and the strategies that supported them, but the intent was always clear. Agree or disagree with it, that’s what policy looks like.

As I crafted my list of Trump policies it quickly became clear that what I was able to name was a list of Trump actions. What wasn’t clear was any identifiable policy behind them. Here are some examples.

Two of the first things Trump did upon assuming office was to pull us out of both the Paris Climate Accord and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Those are not policies; they are actions. What is the foreign policy those actions support? What is his policy on climate warming?

He took us out of the JCPOA – the Iran deal. Iran was in full compliance with the agreement at the time. After Trump took the U.S. out of the deal, Iran promptly restarted its uranium enrichment program, exactly what the JCPOA had stopped. Since then he has levied new sanctions, has pressured allies to institute snap-back sanctions and talked very tough against Iran. Again, these are all actions, but I’m hard pressed to identify the policy they serve.

He boasted he would “drain the swamp,” but has installed mostly swamp creatures in his Cabinet; i.e., industry moguls, insiders and lobbyists in charge of their own industry. What’s the policy?

He talks tough about law and order and has sent federal troops to attack protesters in, for example, Portland, OR. But apparently the protests and white supremacist violence in Charlottesville were okay – no troops were sent there. Plus he praised the 17 year old vigilante who killed 2 protesters and injured a third in Kenosha. What is his law and order policy?

He has dramatically reduced legal immigration but used 5 immigrants as props in a new citizenship ceremony on the second night of the RNC show and did so without their consent. In speaking about immigration he has excoriated “sh#t-hole” countries and called for more immigration from Norway. What is his policy on immigration?

He has tried multiple times to ban all Muslims from entering the country. What is his policy on freedom of religion?

His actions regarding China are schizophrenic. What is his China policy?

He gave Kim Jong-un international standing by meeting with him and then claimed a great victory for the U.S., saying he had negotiated the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Regardless, there has been no change in North Korea’s behavior, nor a disposal of its nuclear arsenal or its missiles, despite Trump’s claim the he and Kim “fell in love.” What is Trump’s policy regarding North Korea?

Roughly 80% of terrorist acts in the U.S. are done by white supremacists. Trump never addresses that, but does rail about MS-13, ISIS and Muslim/Islamist terrorists. What is his policy regarding terrorism in the U.S.?

Trump is once again challenging the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) in order to eliminate it. He promised during the 2016 campaign and afterward that he would replace it with a program that is both farther reaching and less expensive, yet four years later has literally nothing to offer in the way of a replacement. What is his healthcare policy? To be fair, in all 10 years since 2010 when the act was passed the Republicans chanted and promised “remove and replace,” yet never offered any replacement, so it appears their policy on healthcare was limited to “Repeal Obamacare.” That isn’t a policy; it’s just an action that is absent of justification.

I truly cannot answer my own questions and my pal John is pretty well challenged to name policy, too.

As I made my list I tried valiantly to avoid judgment and snark and must confess I didn’t do well with that.  Nevertheless, I continue to want clarity about policy. Not presidential flamboyant statements, not tough guy posturing, but actual national policy, so I turn to you.

Please post your notions in the Comments section about any Trump policy that seems clear to you. I’m after coherent statements, something that might be on a screen at the front of the Situation Room and on a flip chart in the Oval Office to keep everyone clear and focused.

What are Trump’s national policies?

—————————

Speaking of policy, if Joe Biden wins he’ll be wise to follow some of the FDR policy advice as explained in a recent David Brooks piece. The loud voices on the left want a revolution, but most Americans want something that goes down a bit easier.

Trump’s Folly v2.0

Reading time – 2:37  .  .  .

In the chaos of Trump’s attempt to instigate war with Iran, we’re left with contradictions and confusion. Trump and his people continue to offer crazy non-justifications for the assassinations and they further spin mayhem.

For example, a Marine Corps. General wrote a letter to the Iraqi government declaring our upcoming exit from that country. Then the Trump mouthpieces and the Pentagon unwound that. They just can’t get their story straight. Pundits have repeatedly declared that the Trump administration doesn’t have its act together. I think that’s wrong.

I think an act is all they have together. It’s international bumbling by treating foreign relations as a reality TV show. It’s everything as a transaction and never having a strategy or clarity about lasting goals. It’s vacuous chest thumping and braying of non-truth as though just saying something would make it so. That act is all they have and they have that together all the time.

It’s substance that they don’t have together. Every day they show the world that they aren’t even close to a path of substance. It’s pretending to be powerful instead of actually being powerful.

Trump instigated tit-for-tat attacks on Iran. Iran said they wouldn’t pursue more strikes if the U.S. did not retaliate for their ballistic missile attacks, which harmed nobody and damaged nothing. That’s Iran dictating terms to Mr. Tough Guy, who always has to hit back harder and hit last. Trump can’t allow himself to appear to be controlled by Iran, so he made an address that was as bellicose as possible and made it sound like Iran had caved. He repeated several lies about President Obama, too, most notably claiming Obama give Iran the money to build a bomb.

As is Trump’s standard, he performed self-puffery and generally tried to sound like the meanest S.O.B. in town. He even jammed the stage with military people wearing all their medals. It was a very Tough Guy visual. But not even Congress is convinced this was anything but a brainless episode, even after a long overdue briefing.

In fact, Mike Lee (R-UT) called it the worst military briefing he had heard in 9 years. He was greatly and appropriately offended over being told not to debate or question the administration’s handling of Iran. Even Rand Paul (R-KY) ripped the briefing. It was reported that when the questions became difficult, the briefers walked out.

So, we still don’t have justification for the assassination of Suleimani – nobody does – other than that he was a bad guy. We’ve known that for decades and took no action against him for obvious reasons. Why was it necessary to do such a provocative thing just now?

The timing  can be explained by Trump needing to distract from his impeachment. This whole thing is a Trumpian bag of self-serving lunacy. And there might be even more to it.

Vladimir Putin just happens to be in the middle-east right now. This is the perfect time for him to step in and be the peacemaker, the statesman. That will solidify Russia’s power and influence in the region and will essentially eliminate America’s.

The tail is now fully wagging the dog and we ask again, why does everything lead back to Putin?

PS – This morning Joe Scarborough went off on Trump over his taking off 1 of every 3 days during his presidency to play golf at his resorts at taxpayer expense and promoting his properties in the process. Would that such a topic were what’s most important now .  .  .

Trump’s Folly

Reading time – 3:23  .  .  .

With impeachment on his doorstep driving further mental instability, Trump needs a new and powerful distraction. That’s paired with his need to appear to be the always-wins tough guy. That’s a very dangerous combination.

I have warned about Trump doing a “wag the dog” (here, here, here and elsewhere) in order to help ensure his reelection. After all, there’s nothing like war to get Americans to forget about a current scandal and to line up in support of a leader, regardless of how wrong-headed he is. Think: George W. Bush and his war in Iraq. And his war in Afghanistan, where the goal posts kept getting moved further away.

Now in a major act of chest thumping, Trump has assassinated Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani and killed others, too. These aren’t just acts of war, but are face slaps to the Iranians as well, and Iran is vowing retaliation. When they act, Trump is sure to hit back harder and draw us ever deeper into a prolonged conflict.

Recall the Powell Doctrine, forged from lessons learned from the pain of the war in Vietnam. According to Secretary (formerly General) Colin Powell, all of these questions must be answered in the affirmative before military action is taken:

  1. Is a vital national security interest threatened?
  2. Do we have a clear attainable objective?
  3. Have the risks and costs been fully and frankly analyzed?
  4. Have all other non-violent policy means been fully exhausted?
  5. Is there a plausible exit strategy to avoid endless entanglement?
  6. Have the consequences of our action been fully considered?
  7. Is the action supported by the American people?
  8. Do we have genuine broad international support?

Decide for yourself if you think we have eight YES answers for dealing with Iran by using our military power. I count only one.

Don’t imagine that this conflict with Iran won’t eventually include the use of nuclear weapons, because Trump has threatened to use them repeatedly. He will claim that nukes are required in order to stop Iran from building its own nuclear bombs. These are the very bombs Iran was not building before Trump pulled the U.S. out of the JCPOA (the “Iran nuclear deal”) and the very ones Iran has vowed to resume building now that we’ve killed Suleimani. He will tell us that Iran plans to use their nuclear bombs on New York and in the “heartland” or some other allusion to Trump country.

After we nuke Iran, you don’t suppose that Iranian survivors will want revenge, do you? Or that they would use a bomb on us if they had one?  Or that we might become the world’s most reviled nation?

Meanwhile, in the face of the Suleimani assassination and the conflict escalation it promises, Congress has yet again fallen pitifully into its standard partisan divide that is self-neutering. There is no bi-partisan movement to re-assert Congressional control of war making and stop executive branch overreach. There is no adult in the aggregate of the Capitol building.

He was always an extreme bad guy, but there were solid reasons why neither George W. Bush nor Barack Obama assassinated Suleimani. Those facts haven’t changed, but Trump, in his standard transactional behavior, pulled the trigger. Having done that won’t stop or even slow any planned attacks by Iranian surrogates, because if these plans exist, they’re already in progress. Neither will it interfere with Iranian military hierarchy, as Suleimani was replaced within a day. What it has done is to change the focus in this country from impeachment to hostilities in the middle-east. Wag the dog.

There are millions of Americans, especially Evangelicals, looking forward to Armageddon. Trump’s wag the dog folly could get them there – and all the rest of us, too.
